Mathew Ngau Jau is an acclaimed master of the sapeh, the traditional lute-like instrument of the Orang Ulu people who live in the longhouses along the rivers of Central Borneo. It was originally used for ritualistic music to induce trance. Its intricate rhythms may be inspired by dreams. Matthew is also an accomplished painter, traditional Orang Ulu dancer, and blowpipe marksman.
Mathew learned the instrument as a child at Long Semiyang, Ulu Baram in the interior of Sarawak. After his school education, and having pursued a career in teaching, Ngau Jau came under the tutelage of the late Tusau Padan, a master sapeh musician and artist.
Since the death of Tusau, Ngau Jau has taken over his mantle to promote the art of ‘sapeh’ music and also the art of painting Kenyah traditional motifs on bark.
He is also an expert in the Orang-Ulu warrior dance and is an accomplished blow-pipe marksman.
Combining all these skills, Ngau Jau is much sought after to promote the traditional arts of Sarawak, and for tourism promotions overseas.
We have Mathew's CD available for sale for $15. A DVD of Mathew playing music, dancing, singing, fishing and at play at his Olo Baram longhouse will be available during the USA tour in July, 2010
