Bangie Anak Embol

Mdm. Bangie ak. Embol is the acknowledged weaving leader of the weaving community in Rumah Garie longhouse, along the river Sungai Kain, Kapit District.

Her mother, Mdm. Karama ak. Dampa (now 85 yrs old) has passed on the mantel of the leadership to her known as "Indu Nakar, Indu Ngar" - or "she who knows the secret ingredients of the mordanting."

Her weaving group of about 50 women are the only group of Iban "pua-kumbu" or warp-ikat weavers who has accomplished using the silk yarn for their weaving in natural dyes.

They were introduced to this new silk yarn in 1988 by Edric Ong, President of Society Atelier Sarawak, the Arts and Crafts Society of Sarawak, East Malaysia.

Since then, their textiles have been much sought after by textile collectors, museums and galleries world-wide because of their uniqueness and beauty, retaining their traditional motifs and stories , thus known as "Woven Dreams" as indeed many are inspired through dreams!

Bangie's weavings are in the collection of UNESCO in Paris, the National Gallery, Royalty, and in collections in Sweden, Paris, Switzerland, Britain, India, Japan etc.
